Following the course, participants will be able to:

• Assess infection prevention needs to plan for safe work.
• Identify potential risks of transmission of contaminants during construction, renovation or maintenance.
• Use the ICRA to recommend the appropriate infection control risk mitigation.
• Communicate the plan and engage the team to safely carry out the work.

Introduction to the �����Թ�ICRA 2.0^TM Process

• Describe the importance of assessing infection risk during construction and maintenance activities using the �����Թ�ICRA 2.0 process.
• Determine key roles of the ICRA team.
• Establish how the �����Թ�ICRA 2.0 is used to plan for infection prevention.

Step 1. Define the activity

• Consider the full scope of tasks from small maintenance to large construction.
• Identify work hazards that increase risks to patients.
• Ask the right questions to accurately determine the level of work.

Step 2. Identify the patient risk

• Explain the types of patients who are particularly vulnerable.
• Classify patient risk categories and care areas.
• Ask the right questions to gain understanding of patient vulnerabilities.

Step 3. Define the class of precautions

• Cross-reference work type and patient risk to identify class of precautions.
• Balance risk needs with cost, materials and scheduling.
• Identify work that could fit into standing orders.

Step 4. Assess the surrounding area

• Survey work areas and adjacencies that may be affected.
• Consider how building structure and systems may be affected by work.
• Ask the right questions to identify unknown exposure.

Step 5. Establish a mitigating plan

• Make appropriate accommodations to work plan to control risk to patients.
• Explicitly communicate controls and mitigation expectations.
• Conduct a walk through to discuss mitigation measures.

Conclusion: Now what?

• Gain approval for your �����Թ�ICRA 2.0 plan.
• Communicate across teams throughout the process.
• Monitor to ensure that mitigation procedures are applied appropriately.
• Adjust through the life cycle of the project or as circumstances change.
